Summer Intensive 2008

The Course
January 2001, Debbie Allen opened the doors of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, driven by a commitment to train aspiring young dancers, as well as take dance into communities where youth have limited access for instruction.  The response to Ms. Allen's vision has been nothing short of remarkable.  Promising young dancers, 8 to 21 years old, from all across the United States, South America, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia gather at DADA every July to be personally challenged by Ms. Allen and her stellar faculty.  The Summer Intensive students dance six days a week, 9:00 am - 4:00 p.m. with a daily lunch break.  The Summer Intensive culminates with a 3 theatre recitals, allowing each dancer to display their new found growth in technique and artistry. Dancers are required to study Ballet, Horton-based Modern, Jazz, Tap, African, Dunham, Flamenco, Character, Hip-Hop, Voice, and Musical Theatre.  With the teacher's recommendation, Pointe and Pas de Deux are offered to those with strong ballet technique.

 Auditions and Placement
To ensure your place in our Summer Intensive, an audition is necessary.  The first audition will be held January 12, 2008 at 5:00 pm and we will continue holding auditions until all the allotted slots for each level have been filled. There is a $25 Audition fee; payment is accepted by cash or credit card.  Dancers should come prepared with the proper clothing and shoes.  Please bring a passport-size photo.  If you are a returning dancer from Summer Intensive 2007, an audition is not necessary.  Simply return your renewal forms, with the appropriate deposits, as quickly as possible to ensure your space in the Summer Intensive. All other candidates must audition for placement.

Out-of-town candidates may send a 2-3 minute video exhibiting either Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Hip-Hop or Tap at their present skill level as soon as possible to ensure your space. Please include a cover letter that gives a brief description of your dance training, a passport-size photo, your phone number and a $25 Money Order for the audition fee. Videos should be addressed: Attention: Denise Harris, Summer Intensive 2008.

Tuition & Housing
Tuition for Summer Intensive 2008 is $1,500.00, which includes the cost of a specially prepared catered lunch everyday.  A non-refundable tuition deposit of $500 is due by Feb. 27, 2008, and the balance of $1000 by May 6, 2008. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will no longer be housing the students in the dorms at LMU.  As a result, we will be housing our dancers in the dormitories at UCLA, approximately fifteen minutes by car or bus from the Academy.   Students opting to staying in the dorms will receive a $200 reduction in tuition; therefore, these students’ cost of tuition will be $1,300.  The cost of housing is now $2,100, which includes bus transportation to and from the Academy and daily breakfast and dinner. A non-refundable housing deposit of $500 is due by Feb. 1, 2008 and the balance of $1,600 no later than May 6, 2008.  There are absolutely no refunds after June 1, 2008.

Orientation Day
It is mandatory that all students, local and out-of-town, attend Orientation July 6, 3 p.m., at the Academy.  If you are staying in the dormitories, check-in is July 6, at Loyola-Marymount University, beginning at 9 am until 1 pm. Lunch will be available on campus and a bus provided for transportation to the 3 pm.
